Rollin Johnson Jr. Named Director of Belonging

SUMMARY: JMU Student Affairs welcomes Rollin Johnson Jr. as director of belonging. He will lead CMSS and campus initiatives that help students find community and connection.


JMU Student Affairs is pleased to welcome Rollin Johnson Jr. as the new director of belonging. In this role, Rollin will lead the Center for Multicultural Student Services (CMSS) and other initiatives designed to help students find community on campus.

Before joining Student Affairs, Rollin worked with JMU’s Madison Center for Community Development on justice and mental health programs. He is also a member of the Madison Circle of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society (ODK).

Rollin brings more than 16 years of experience in strategic planning and program management. His career has centered on strengthening the impact of individuals, universities and organizations within their communities. Prior to his time at JMU, he led civic engagement programs at the University of Michigan’s Ginsberg Center, Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Social Concern, Coe College and Madison House in Charlottesville, Virginia.

He holds a Master of Public Administration (‘23) from James Madison University and an MBA from the Scott L. Carmona College of Business at Saginaw Valley State University. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Strategic Leadership Studies at JMU, with research focused on nonprofit and public leadership and collaborative networks.

He brings a genuine care for people, a steady and centered presence, and a thoughtful way of seeing systems that keep staff and students at the heart of the work. I’m excited for the impact he’ll make as we continue strengthening the student experience together.”

A former Peace Corps volunteer and AmeriCorps VISTA alum, Rollin says he is ready to step into this new position.

“I am excited for the opportunity to serve the JMU community as the director of belonging,” he said. “I am truly looking forward to working alongside our dynamic students, talented staff and a coalition of partners at JMU.”
