School of Professional & Continuing Education (SPCE)
The School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPCE) welcomed partners to an enriching pre-game hospitality event on Saturday, January 13, 2024. It was a celebratory occasion to reflect on great accomplishments from the previous year while eagerly anticipating the opportunities ahead. In his address, SPCE Interim Dean Nick Swartz commended the unwavering dedication and commitment of the SPCE team to the unit’s mission.
Proudly reminiscing on the achievements of the past year, we continue sharing the impact of SPCE within the Harrisonburg community. Through our robust and diverse programs, we have reached demographics that traditional educational systems might leave out. As a unit attuned to community needs, SPCE provides many learning opportunities for individuals of all backgrounds.
Here are some standout achievements from the past year from our diverse portfolio:
Youth Programs: Over 800 K-12 students benefited from educational opportunities through more than 23 summer camps. These camps fostered curiosity and growth and ensured access through need-based funding of more than $14,000.
Lifelong Learning Institute: Membership saw remarkable growth, soaring from 250 members post-Covid to over 800 members in 2023, a testament to the enduring value of lifelong learning.
Adult Degree Program: Serving a considerable number of students, the ADP (Adult Degree Program) facilitated study abroad service-learning trips to Jamaica, Mexico, and Germany, further enriching academic experiences and securing scholarships through the Online Virginia Network.
Professional Development: Through forging new partnerships and programs, we expanded non-credit credential-focused training initiatives. These efforts aim to enhance access and foster both professional and organizational development.
