A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending and presenting at my very first conference. I presented my research, “Student Frustrations: Increasing Tolerance for Mistakes to Embolden Student Voices,” at the 5th Annual Corridors: Blue Ridge Writing & Rhetoric Conference on September 27, 2025.

With the guidance of my professors, I was able to craft my presentation effectively and prepare myself for the big day.

Since another colleague of mine was presenting at the conference as well, a couple of students from my cohort accompanied us for support. Considering the conference took place at Radford University, we had quite a drive ahead of us. During the whole ride, I felt the anticipation and nerves eating away at me, but when we arrived, all my nerves were replaced with determination.

The experience refreshed and rejuvenated my determination to hone my writing skills and validate my thoughts in the field.

Listening to the other insightful presentations and discussing them over Subway sandwiches with my colleagues was a delightful experience. Once the conference ended and we arrived home, I felt a huge weight off my shoulders, but I was very glad I participated.

I encourage my fellow graduate students to take a step out of their comfort zone and participate in any event or conduct any research they feel passionate about. It may feel difficult and overwhelming at times, but the results are truly satisfactory, and the world will have another brilliant mind contributing to it.
