James Madison University’s online Master’s in Computer Science with a concentration in Cybersecurity program continues to earn national recognition, ranking among the nation’s top online programs in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report rankings.

U.S. News evaluates schools based on factors including faculty credentials, student engagement, peer assessment, services and technologies, and student excellence.

JMU consistently stands out for its long-standing leadership in cybersecurity education. Since 1999, the Master’s in Computer Science program has been at the forefront of the field and was among the original institutions designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity by the National Security Agency/Central Security Service and the Department of Homeland Security. That foundation continues to shape the program today, preparing students to address modern security challenges across industries.

“This recognition speaks to the vitality of our program and its relevance for today’s professionals,” said Dr. Vetria Byrd, department head of computer science. “Our graduate program prepares students to advance in their current roles, transition into new careers, and stay competitive through rigorous, real-world cybersecurity education delivered by exceptional faculty.”

The graduate program is designed for working professionals seeking to expand their technical expertise, deepen their understanding of cybersecurity, and position themselves for career advancement. It is delivered 100% online and is taught by the same full-time faculty who teach in JMU’s undergraduate Computer Science Program. This ensures academic rigor, consistency, and direct access to faculty expertise grounded in both teaching and applied research.

While the program is entirely online, it is intentionally designed to foster meaningful connection and collaboration between students and faculty.

“Students are often surprised by the level of interaction they have with both professors and classmates,” said Dr. Brett Tjaden, program director and computer science professor. “Many students who attend in-person commencement say that meeting classmates and faculty in person feels like reconnecting with colleagues they already know well – relationships formed through meaningful interaction and collaboration in the program.”

Graduates move into advanced roles across cybersecurity, information technology, and national security. They hold leadership positions within federal agencies, private industry, and higher education, contributing to cybersecurity strategy, systems design, and technology innovation at national and global levels.

For professionals looking to stay relevant and competitive in an ever-changing technology landscape, apply now to JMU’s online Master’s in Computer Science program.
