SUMMARY: The College of Arts and Letters has opened applications for six new faculty members, who will be hired as a cohort, to work broadly across areas of racial and social justice, minority cultures and critical race studies.

Beginning this week, a first-of-its-kind initiative launches in the College of Arts and Letters as six departments begin searches for outstanding tenure-track faculty working broadly across areas of racial and social justice, minority cultures and critical race studies

Arriving as a cohort, the six new faculty members will enhance existing strengths in several interconnected areas of the humanities and social sciences.  The college is home to the renowned Furious Flower Poetry Center (focusing on Black poetry and poetics); the program in African, African American, and Diaspora Studies; the program in Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies; and many scholars across disciplines who teach and conduct research on the issues of concern in this cohort hire.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity for the College of Arts and Letters,” said Dean Robert D. Aguirre. “We will be searching for excellent applicants within particular disciplines, but also scholars and teachers eager to work across them, strengthening our commitment to social change by engaging the critical issues of our times. We are confident that these new colleagues will enhance our faculty, student and curricular diversity.

The new hires will be appointed in the departments of Sociology and Anthropology; History; Political Science; Justice Studies; Philosophy and Religion; and Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communication. The start date for each position is August 2021.

Review of applications will begin immediately, but these positions will remain open until filled. To learn more about the cohort hire writ large, about each position and to apply, please refer to the postings on JMU’s HR recruitment site, JobLink.
