2018-19 BTC Calendar: Carlos Alemán

Being the Change

JANUARYHarrisonburg’s growing diversity is what has kept Carlos Alemán in the area — and at JMU — for 20 years. As an associate professor of communication studies and a JMU Professor in Residence at Harrisonburg City Public Schools, Carlos realizes the extent of misunderstanding about Latino families and communities. In 2012, he helped found the Scholars’ Latino Initiative, which supports under-resourced Latinx high school students in the area by providing learning and mentoring opportunities. The organization quickly grew, and now serves 40 students at two area high schools. Since its start, the organization has also awarded more than $70,000 in college support from private donors and has connected more than 30 college students as peer mentors.
