From the Alumni Family: A Welcome to JMU’s New President
Alumni
SUMMARY: Welcoming remarks from the JMUAA president offered alumni support and optimism as JMU begins a new chapter.
It is an honor to stand before you today on this momentous occasion as we celebrate the inauguration of James Madison University’s seventh president, James C. Schmidt. My name is Ellen Wescott Hineman, Class of 1989, and I have the privilege of serving as the President of the JMU Alumni Association. On behalf of our more than 170,000 living alumni around the world, I am proud to extend our warmest welcome to you, President Jim.
JMU alumni are a powerful and passionate community. Our alumni are mentors, guiding students and fellow graduates as they navigate their personal and professional journeys. Our alumni are philanthropists, giving back to ensure that future generations have an even more impactful and life-changing Madison Experience than the one that shaped us.
In addition to who we are, it is what we do that defines us. We open doors—creating professional opportunities where none existed before. We advocate for this university, championing its mission and values wherever life takes us. And we drive change, committed to making a meaningful impact in our communities and in the world.
President Jim, when our Board met with you in February, one thing was immediately clear: You have a powerful and defining vision for our beloved institution—one rooted in innovation, student success, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
As alumni, we stand ready to be your strategic partner and your competitive advantage. We are more than a network; we are the fuel for your vision. We look forward to a partnership where you leverage the full power and passion of this global alumni base to drive JMU’s next phase of growth.
Today marks not just the beginning of a new presidency, but the continuation of a remarkable journey for James Madison University. President Jim and First Lady Kim, we are thrilled to welcome you into the JMU family. We look forward to the legacy we will build together.
Welcome home—and as always, Go Dukes!
