Creating Pathways to Success: Inside JMU's Student Success Coaching Program
News
The Student Success Analytics team is committed to identifying and closing retention gaps while improving overall student success at James Madison University. A cornerstone of this effort is Student Success Coaching, a personalized support service that helps students navigate both academic and personal challenges through one-on-one coaching and meaningful connections to campus resources.
Student Success Coaching extends beyond traditional academic support. Coaches work closely with students to address four key areas of student success: academics, well-being, basic needs, and social support. By helping students develop strategies in each of these areas, coaches foster the skills and confidence students need to achieve their goals and thrive at JMU.
Academic coaching focuses on developing effective habits and strategies, including time management, study skills, organization, and learning techniques. Coaches also assist students in building self-advocacy skills, managing stress, practicing mindfulness, developing budgeting skills, and accessing resources related to food security, nutrition, and technology needs.
Individual coaching sessions are available Monday through Thursday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. and 1:00-3:00 p.m. Appointments are typically held in the Learning Centers within the Student Success Center, with virtual Zoom options available to provide additional flexibility for students.
According to Success Coach Maddie Martin, coaching is tailored to each student's unique circumstances. "Success is co-created between us and the student," Martin explains. Rather than defining success for students, coaches work collaboratively to identify goals, address obstacles, and develop personalized action plans. Some students seek support during challenging times, while others use coaching to maintain momentum, stay accountable, and build on existing success.
The coaching process often begins with a conversation centered on the student's aspirations, challenges, and motivations. Through this partnership, coaches help students create realistic goals and develop strategies that support both academic achievement and a sense of belonging on campus. As Martin notes, the ultimate objective is to help students become well-rounded individuals who are succeeding academically, enjoying their college experience, and feeling connected to the JMU community.
In addition to one-on-one coaching, the Student Success team offers workshops and programs that promote personal development and well-being. Topics include SMART goal setting, organization and learning strategies, and well-being practices that contribute to student success both inside and outside the classroom. The program has also partnered with the Health 100 Wellness Passport Program, allowing certain workshops to count toward program requirements.
Looking ahead, Student Success Coaches hope to expand awareness of their services across campus and reach even more students. Their goal is to ensure that every student knows help is available, whether they are experiencing challenges or simply looking to enhance their success. Through personalized coaching, resource connections, and ongoing support, the Student Success Coaching program empowers students to achieve their goals and make the most of their JMU experience.
