Brent Ritter of the Honors College and Johnathan Walker of University Studies and the Department of Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies were recognized as JMU Game Changers during Saturday's Homecoming football game against Georgia State.
The Game Changer program recognizes faculty and staff members whose contributions make a meaningful impact on students, colleagues and the university community.
An academic advisor in the Honors College, Ritter was nominated by Allison Fagan, associate dean of the Honors College and professor, for his dedication to student success and commitment to helping students achieve their goals.
“Brent is a talented and dedicated advisor who works tirelessly to ensure the students in our program have the tools they need to succeed regardless of the path they choose,” Fagan said. “He treats each student with respect, helps them see the way forward when they are unsure, and contributes to the Honors staff team in ways large and small.”
Fagan said Ritter's “quiet determination to do right by our students has made him an indispensable part of the Honors College.”
Walker, a faculty member in the Department of Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies, was nominated by Audrey Burnett, associate dean of University Studies and associate director for online strategy, for his unwavering commitment to students both inside and outside the classroom.
“Johnathan consistently goes above and beyond for his advisees and students who enroll in his classes, often meeting with students to answer their questions and hold study sessions outside of normal business hours,” Burnett said.
Burnett noted that Walker's commitment to student success has been recognized through university teaching and advising awards. She also praised his visible support of students across campus.
“He also regularly attends sporting events to support his students,” Burnett said. “Johnathan lives and breathes JMU, and it shows through his compassion and dedication to our students.”
JMU Athletics recognizes Game Changer honorees at home football games throughout the season. The Game Changer program is presented by the financial advisers at Good Wealth Management, serving the Madison community.
