First-generation student honor society launches at JMU

JMU News

JMU proudly announces the launch of its chapter of Tri-Alpha (Alpha Alpha Alpha), a national honor society recognizing the academic achievements of first-generation college students.

With this new chapter, JMU joins a growing network of institutions across Virginia and the nation that are committed to supporting first-gen students in their academic and professional journeys.

Tri-Alpha membership is by invitation and is open to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff, who are the first in their families to complete a bachelor’s degree. Eligible students must meet specific enrollment and GPA requirements and demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence. Once initiated, membership is for life.

More than an honor society, Tri-Alpha at JMU is a supportive community that brings together first-generation students from all disciplines. Through mentorship, workshops, service projects and social events, the chapter helps students build confidence, strengthen leadership skills and form lasting connections with fellow first-gen Dukes.

For many students, being the first in their family to attend college brings both pride and pressure. Tri-Alpha eases that journey by celebrating milestones, fostering belonging and opening doors to scholarships, networking and leadership opportunities. The society also provides graduation regalia so members can proudly represent their accomplishments at commencement.

Tri-Alpha is more than recognition—it's a resource, a network and a celebration of resilience and achievement. It’s one more way JMU prepares students for meaningful lives and successful futures. To learn more or explore student membership opportunities, visit the Tri-Alpha website at JMU.
