Policy and process updates made due to new Title IX regulations

The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights released new Title IX regulations in May 2020 with an effective date of August 14, 2020. The regulations set forth requirements for how institutions receiving federal funds must investigate and adjudicate alleged cases of sexual harassment under Title IX. 

To adhere to the new regulations, JMU has created Policy 1346: Title IX Sexual Harassment. As a result, changes have been made to the JMU Student Handbook, and Academic Affairs and Human Resources have created new Title IX Sexual Harassment grievance processes in compliance with the new regulations.

JMU will continue to address sexual misconduct that falls outside the scope of Title IX through Policy 1340: Sexual Misconduct. Policy 1340 is currently under review. The university will communicate in the coming weeks regarding this policy and related processes.

As always, individuals should contact the Title IX Office to report or file a complaint of sex discrimination or sexual harassment. The Title IX Office can provide information, resources and support. The Title IX Coordinator’s contact information is as follows:
