James Madison University’s Division of University Advancement operates as the strategic funnel through which alumni, parents, community members, corporations, and foundations channel their support to the institution. Led since 2012 by Nick Langridge, Ph.D.—a JMU alum with degrees spanning communication, business, and strategic leadership—the division has notably overseen the conclusion of the "Unleashed" campaign. Initially targeting $150 million and later $200 million, the campaign ultimately raised an impressive $251 million, resulting in a threefold increase in annual giving under his leadership. Structurally, the division encompasses Communications, Marketing & Branding, Development & Principal Giving, Constituent Engagement, Information Systems, and Advancement Planning & Operations.
Functioning across five integrated phases—identifying constituents, informing them of JMU's mission, engaging them in campus life, prompting philanthropic investment, and stewarding their gifts—the division aims to deepen both financial commitment and community connection. It aligns its efforts with a clear mission to "engage our constituents to invest their talents and resources in support of JMU’s mission," underpinned by core values like integrity, inclusion, relationships, inspiration, collaboration, and results. Operating through dedicated offices—such as Strategic Gifts, Advancement Marketing, Donor Relations, AIS (Information Services), and Planning & Operations—the division supports a robust fundraising ecosystem designed to bolster scholarships, faculty, programming, endowment growth, and the broader Madison Experience.
