Bridging the Valley Stipend Explanation 2013-2014

Students receive a total of $1,600.00 for participating in the Summer Bridge Program and the Academic Year Program.  The stipend is split into two payments as follows:

  • Payment 1: $800.00 for participating in the Summer Bridge Program
  • Payment 2: $800.00 for participating in the 2013-14 Academic Year Programming/Collaborative Learning Club (CLC). (Please refer to your home institution for an explanation of part two.)

Payment I: Participation in the Summer Bridge Program
Stipend: $800.00

To receive payment one of the stipend, students must meet the following criteria:

Math Course:

Students must receive a C or better in Math.  Attendance and participation in class and study halls are required.

Science Sessions:

Students are required to maintain a 70% or better on their “Science Lab Notebook”.  Notebooks are used in science sessions during the first two weeks of the program and are graded after each session.

Payment II: Participation in 2013-2014 Academic Programming / Collaborative Learning Clubs (CLC)
Stipend: $800.00

The second stipend payment varies within each college/university. Please refer to your home institution (listed below) for an explanation.


Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC)

Upon successful completion of the first academic semester, BRCC students receive a total of $800.00 split into two separate payments:

Students receive a payment of $600.00 after:

  1. Successfully completing a four credit hour science or technology course and a Pre-Calculus (MTH 163, 164  or 166) or Calculus I (MTH 173). A combined minimum GPA of 2.4 is required for both courses.
  2. Participating in the CLC sessions at BRCC, and
  3. Successfully completing Student Orientation to STEM (SDV 101-01).

 Students receive a second payment of $200.00 upon completion of the CLC sessions during the spring semester.


Bridgewater College (BC)

Upon successful completion of the first academic semester, Bridgewater students receive a total of $800.00 split into three separate payments:

Students receive a payment of $300.00 after successfully completing a science project with a Bridgewater faculty member.  As part of the science project, students are required to:

  1. Keep a notebook and maintain appropriate records
  2. Complete assigned readings (3-4 articles or book chapters)
  3. Participate in research with his/her advisor (25-35 hours in the fall)

A second payment of $300.00 is pro-rated based on participation in four workshops during the fall semester. Workshops are designed to address transitional issues for first year students.  Sessions are one hour and scheduled around student schedules for August, September, October and November months.

Students receive a third and final payment of $200 after attending three spring semester meetings during the months of February, March and April.


Eastern Mennonite University (EMU)

Upon successful completion of the first academic semester, EMU students receive a total of $800.00 split into two separate payments:

Students receive a payment of $600.00 after participating in the following EMU STEM Learning (community wide) Activities.
Students must:

  1. Attend a minimum of two EMU STEM lunches during the fall
  2. Participate in mentor events – individual small group study sessions 
  3. Participate in one-on-one mentor/mentee meetings 
  4. Attend two of the Suter Science Fall Seminars and STEM led discussions 
  5. Participate in assessment activities, including surveys and focus groups as requested

Students receive a second payment of $200.00 after participating in one of two career exploration STEM Learning Center sessions and two Suter Science Seminar during the spring semester.


James Madison University (JMU)

Upon successful completion of the first academic semester, JMU students receive a total of $800.00 split into two separate payments:

Students receive a payment of $600.00 after they meet the following criteria:

  1. Successfully complete ISAT 180 (students are pre-registered for this once a week, one credit course)
  2. Participate in the Collaborative Learning Club (CLC)
  3. Participate in assessment activities including surveys and focus groups
  4. Reside in designated dorm with other STEM/Bridging the Valley students for the first academic year

Students receive a second payment of $200.00  after participating in two CLC activities during the spring semester.
