Spring 2023

Internship
Research and Policy Analysis at Forbes Tate Partners

Where are you from?  Why did you choose JMU?
I am from Harrisonburg and grew up hearing great things about JMU. My mother actually received her masters from this university. This school has a phenomenal political science department, which heavily influenced my decision. Ultimately, I chose JMU because of its beautiful campus and the great opportunities this school holds, like the Washington Semester!

Why did you decide to participate in Washington Semester?
While approaching the later years of my college careet, I was thrilled to find an opportunity to get my foot in teh door professionally. Gaining real-world experience while still being a student sounded incredible, and it was.  I wasnted to learn more about the kinds of careers possible in political science and to make connecions for myself after graduation. I also couldn't pass up the chance to live in D.C. and get a preview of my potential future there.

What were the highlights of your internship?
A huge highle of my internship was when Forbes Tate Partners hosted an event with a variety of Congressmen and women. Listening to these politicians speak from their hearts was amazing. Another highlight was working on a project to further economic equality initiatives in Congress which gave me a lot of insight about bipartisan leadership. Additionally, the people I worked with at Forbes Tate Partners were incredibly kind and generous which truly elevated my experience.

What advice would you offer to future Washington Semester students?
The Washington Semester will push you in ways you haven't been pushed before. It is definitely a shift from being a normal university student, but it's entirely worth it. Although it may be overwhelming at certain moments, take time to enjoy living in the middle of D.C. Go to muzeums and events! Go out of your way to connect professionally, but also to connect with the student in your cohort.

What are your long-term career plans?
I would love to work in human or civil rights. When I graduate, I plan to build up my career and experience for a few years and then go back to school for either my masters or law degree, depending on where my career takes me. I hope to be working in either D.C. or New York City; I love both places and the opportunities in both cities are endless.
