Domain Name/Hosting Assignment

You are required to acquire a domain name and a web hosting account for use in this class. Here are the required parts:

* Domain Name: Acquire a domain name that will be suitable for representing your work to a potential employer or client. Acquire a domain name that closely matches your personal name or that represents a professional identity that you could use as a calling card to potential employers or clients. Here are some examples:

Domain Names Representing a Personal Name Domain Names Representing a Professional Identity
johhndoe.com
johndoe.net
johndoe.org
johndoe.name
acmemultimedia.biz
acedesign.net
hnet.com
highgfx.com

You shouldn't have to pay more than about $5.00 - $10.00 for a one-year domain name registration. Of course, you are welcome to sign up for a longer period of time. I only care that the domain name will work through the rest of the semester. Ideally, you will use this long after your time at JMU. You can either acquire the domain name via a registry service, or incorporate the purchase as part of the services you receive when signing up for a web hosting account with a web host or web presence provider.

* Web Hosting: You need to acquire a web hosting account from one of the thousands of companies who offer this service. This should not be very expensive. You can find web hosting companies charging in the range of $3.00 - $10.00 per month who provide all of the services required for this class. You'll need to pay for hosting for a period of time that will last through the end of the semester. Do plenty of research on these companies.

Below are a few recommendations and requirements

- Ability to use your own domain name (REQUIRED)
- FTP Access (REQUIRED)
- At least one email account (REQUIRED)
- Control Panel (REQUIRED)
- 100 Megabyte Storage (MINIMUM REQUIREMENT)

What you DO NOT need:

- Shell access

It doesn't matter if your account is hosted on a Microsoft or Linux platform. (Very little hosting is done on a Mac).
