The Office of International Programs encourages the use of international resources to enhance the programming and educational events sponsored by academic departments. Many international visitors are eligible to receive honorariums for their services but some visa types preclude this. It is therefore imperative that the Department contacts the International Student and Scholar Services prior to signing a contract with any international service provider, even for a short-term or one-time appointment.
In short, a person in the U.S. on a B visa or a visa waiver may accept an honorarium if s/he is going to be at JMU for less than 9 days and s/he has not been at more than 5 U.S. institutions in the previous 6 months. A person in the U.S. on a J-1 visa issued from another institution must give JMU prior written permission in order for an honorarium to be approved. For a complete list of the visa types eligible for an honorarium at JMU, please visit the JMU Payroll office.
Prior to bringing a visiting scholar to JMU, please attend to all pertinent tasks identified on the Department Checklist for Sponsoring International Scholars.
