There is no application fee for Honors.

2017-18 Honors College Application Deadlines
Early Action: Nov. 30, 2017
Regular Decision: Feb. 28, 2018
JMU's Online Application

If using JMU's online application, you must first submit the JMU application before applying to the Honors College.

After submitting your JMU application, you can access the Honors College application with the same username that you used on your JMU application.

Do not wait to receive your decision from JMU before submitting the Honors College application. You can apply anytime before the deadline.

JMU's Coalition Application

If using the JMU Coalition Application, you may apply to the Honors College through that application.

You have two options:

1. Submit the Honors College application as part of your coalition application. Answer "yes" to the prompt, "Are you interested in applying to the James Madison University Honors College?"

2. Submit the Honors College application later if you would like additional time to finalize your responses. Respond "no" to the Honors College prompt, then email the following to the Associate Dean of Admissions prior to the Honors application deadline:

  • A list of high school and community activities in which you have participated. Indicate how long you have participated, positions of leadership you have held, and awards or recognition received. Significant travel and work experiences may be included.
  • A list of distinctions you have earned. (Example: Boy's/Girl's State, National Honors Society, art or music award.)
  • Responses to the two Honors essay questions listed below.
Essay Questions

Applicants to the Honors College must submit two supplemental essay questions. Your responses should be in your own words and each response should be at least 200 and no more than 500 words. Your responses should be crafted to help us understand your life goals and preparation for future plans and also demonstrate that you understand the purpose of the JMU Honors College.

  • Essay Question #1: Based upon your understanding of the Honors College, what kind of student do you think the College should be looking for and why do you think you are that kind of student?
  • Essay Question #2: What are your long-term goals and how do you think participation in the Honors College will help you achieve them?

The questions are the same on both the JMU application and the Coalition application.

Test Scores and Supplemental Material

Self-reporting of SAT I and/or ACT scores is optional. Official test scores are not required to be sent to the Honors College office.

While the application provides room to list some activities, honors, awards, and distinctions, you are encouraged to submit (1) formal resumes and/or (2) updated or semester grades if not reflected on your original transcript(s) submitted to JMU. This supplemental material should be submitted as attachments (PDF format only) to honors@jmu.edu. Please put your full (last/first/middle) name in the subject line.
