New Graduate Student Orientation 
Madison Union Ballroom 

Thursday, June 8, 2017 (for students beginning their graduate program in the summer semester)

and/or

Thursday, August 17, 2017 (for students beginning their graduate program in the fall semester) 

Although the orientation is not mandatory, you are strongly encourage to attend one of them. All of the sessions offered during orientation are optional, so you have the opportunity to attend whichever sessions will be most relevant and helpful to you. You are encouraged to participate in the day long orientation, and yet you are free to attend relevant sessions based on your own availability and time constraints. 

There is no charge to attend the orientation, however we do ask that you register so that we have an accurate account of attendance.

10:40-11:10 am          Breakout Session 2: Nitty Gritty

        • Learning Strategies/ Time Management (Madison Union Ballroom)
        • Graduate Assistant Session (location TBA)
        • tentative... Session for Family/Spouses/Partners:  What to expect when a significant other is in graduate school.  (location TBA)

11:15 -                        Free time and Lunch on Own:  Self-guided tour - visit the Student Success Center – get JACard, visit UREC, Forbes Center, Libraries (East Campus, West Campus); Registered attendees will receive a meal card to use in on-campus dining venues during this time. 

12:00-3:30 pm            Session for International Students - (Center for Global Engagement (CGE), Madison Hall 2nd floor)
                                       
All new international graduate students are encouraged to attend this portion of the orientation. The CGE will provide a lunch.  You will receive other very important information as it relates to international graduate student regulations and issues. 

4 – 5pm                         Social Hour and Graduate Student Life presentation with the Graduate Student Association (GSA) (TGS Lounge, Madison Hall 4th floor)

5/5:30 pm                    Dinner Groups (various locations around downtown) Signup will occur during the social hour. Check back for more information. 

 


Location and Parking

Location - 

The Madison Union Ballroom is located on the 5th Floor of Warren Hall. - JMU Campus Map
Warren Hall does have an elevator to assist you with reaching the 5th floor. 

At this time, we will not have the ability to allow participation via the internet.  

Parking - 

The closest Commuter Student parking lot is C4* - Campus Parking Map  - Lot C5 or the Mason Street and Warsaw Avenue Parking Decks are the next closest parking areas. 

*In JUNE, parking passes for 2017-2018 will not yet be available.  Please park in the designated C4 lot to avoid receiving a parking ticket.
You will need to obtain your campus parking pass from Parking Services prior to parking in designated commuter spots on campus, or risk receiving a ticket. Visit parking services (http://www.jmu.edu/parking) for information on purchasing your parking pass online, fees, and parking areas. You may also visit the Parking Services office, located in the Champions Drive Parking Deck, in person.
