Course Description:  This course is designed to provide an overview of the current issues involved in working with children who have been identified as having an autism spectrum disorder.  Areas addressed will include learning characteristics, current research and factors involved with causation, assessment and diagnosis.  We will discuss only briefly positive behavioral supports; social skills development; sensory processing, motor planning and sensory integration; and communication and language development as these will be covered in much greater depth in other courses.  A range of instructional methodologies and techniques will be emphasized throughout the course. (This is the first required course for the Certificate in Autism Spectrum Studies)

Pre-requisite is the first course in the autism certificate program. (This is the second required course for the Certificate in Autism Spectrum Studies)

EXED 604 OP02 Practicum in Autism Spectrum Disorders

Course Description:   This course is designed to provide in-depth practical application of the knowledge and skills acquired during the preceding coursework in autism.  Students will apply skill sin assessment, planning, implementation and the review and revision of programming specifically developed to address the needs of student learners or clients with a disability along the autism spectrum.  Areas addressed can include learning needs, self-care issues, communication and social sills needs, sensory planning, behavioral challenges, positive behavioral supports, Function Behavioral Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plan Development, and overall program implementation and monitoring.  Students will collect data, develop lessons and behavioral or self-care plans and work with team members to implement, monitor and revise plans.  A range of instructional methodologies and techniques will be emphasized throughout the course.  Pre-requisites include the three courses in the autism certificate program.

Course Description:  The course content includes the design and development of differentiated curriculum for gifted learners.  The emphasis of the course is the adaptation and modification of existing curricula, as well as how to design new curricular materials for gifted learners.  Content includes making decisions about the suitability of curricular materials for gifted learners.

Course Description:  The course content focuses on the seminal and current issues related to the recognition and education of giftedness in individuals from birth through the life span.  Participants will examine the critical issues facing the field of gifted education as well as future directions.  Specific topics include:  (a) Collaboration Between Gifted and General Education; (b) The Psycho-Social Adjustment and Guidance of Gifted Learners; (c) The Plight of Underserved Populations of Gifted Learners; (d) Educational Programming Models for Gifted Education; and (e) The approaches used to measure and assess giftedness.

HIST 501 OP01 We The People:  The Citizen and the Constitution

Course Description:   An instructional program on the history and principles of American constitutional democracy for elementary, middle and high school students.  The program is based on curricular materials developed by the Center of Civic Education and acclaimed by leading educators.  Simulated congressional hearings, excellent for performance assessment, are built into the curriculum.  At the high school level, classes may choose to enter a competition structured as a simulated hearing where their knowledge of the Constitution is tested.

Course Description:    Students will become familiar with general educational issues and music education trends affecting special learners in the United States.  Questions about music education teaching and learning will be covered, variations in language ability, assessment, inclusion, and music education in a diverse world.  The class will develop a sense of community in reading and discussion forums as well as lesson planning.  Students will become knowledgeable in the areas of language, motor, visual, and social development, connecting current research and theory about special learners music education to classroom practice.  To synthesize thinking and learning experiences, students will critically assess inclusive school settings.
