program are eligible for an initial teaching license in early
childhood education (PreK-3rd) in the state of Virginia. This
program serves primarily career change men and women within a 60
mile radius of Harrisonburg .

ESoL Main Street
is a website written for and by ESoL students to
egnage them in becoming active participants in our community while
learning English by researching and writing information about
services, business, and topics of interest. This web site is a
resource for ESL teachers, tutors and learners in the
Harrisonburg/Rockingham area.

Carrier Library at JMU is a
depository (designated by Congress) of over half a million
documents published by the federal and Virginia state governments.
These documents are freely available for use by any citizen of the
Commonwealth and citizens of the congressional district in
particular. The Documents and Reference staff are available for
consultation in the access and use of government information
whether in traditional print format or on a government web site.
Staff consults by phone, e-mail, and in person. Government
documents may be used by all individuals.

The Furious Flower Poetry
Center was established to advance the knowledge and appreciation of
African American poetry. The center has produced a video anthology
of African American poets reading and discussing their poetry, a
book titled The Furious Flowering of African American Poetry, and a
series of lectures and prizes. The center serves faculty, students
from many institutions, poets, critics, scholars in the field, and
poetry lovers.

Generations Together at

Generations Together is a
multi-generational program that pairs a JMU college student and an
older adult from the community as co-mentors to a child in grade
school. The program meets for 10 weeks each fall semester at the
Community Activities Center at Westover Park. The goals of
Generations together are to foster a multi-generational mentoring
relationship; to break down generational stereotypes and labels; to
have fun learning with and from each other; and to build a
multi-generational sense of community. No fee for
participation.

State Eisenhower-funded
project for 6-12 Earth Science teachers. Participants work on
field-based labs in Shenandoah National Park and learn Geographic
Information Science (GIS) software at JMU. Attendance is by
application, and the program runs in June.

This Center is one of eight
regional service centers established by Governor Jim Gilmore and
sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education to assist public
schools in raising the levels of student achievement and meeting
state accreditation standards.
In partnership with James Madison University, the Region 5 Center
offers a multitude of services to public schools in west-central
Virginia including leadership development, faculty and staff
development, and technical assistance. As host agency, JMU has been
extremely helpful and generous in working with the Virginia
Department of Education to establish and support the Region 5
Center.

Healthy Families Page County is a new
program that provides home-visiting for low-income, first-time
parents. A family support worker provides education, mentoring
support, and referrals to appropriate community
resources.

The Health Place is a
collaboration between the Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center
(AHEC) and the James Madison University Nursing Research and
Outreach Center (NROC) and is a resource that promotes the
provision of health and human services that are affordable,
accessible, responsive to, and advance the physical, mental and
developmental health of Page County residents. Programs and
services provided through or supported by The Health Place (THP)
are characterized by their responsiveness to identified community
needs, quality, dignity and respect accorded each
individual.

service arm of the Nursing Research And Outreach Center and focuses
