Center for Applications and Research in Telecommunications (CART)

The CART is a cross-disciplinary join project of the College of Business and the College of Integrated Science and Technology. It is designed to be a focal point for close linkages among academics, telecommunication firms, and local, regional, and national government agencies. Operating as a kind of teaching hospital, the CART supports discussion, research, and practical problem-solving in an overall atmosphere of innovation where students pursuing an academic program are exposed on a regular basis to professioals grappling with real-life business and policy issues.

The center aims to: provide an opportunity form distinguished business leaders in the retailing area to interact with JMU students on a formal and informal basis; provide an opportunity for distinguished business leaders in the retailing area and scholars to exchange ideas and opinions about business and specific retail-related topics; provide the retailing community with research that satisfies their specialized needs; provide seminars, training sessions and continuing education programs to selected segments of the retailing, business, and educational communities; increase awareness of retailing opportunities in teaching, research, and service among faculty members in the Marketing Program, the College of Business, and James Madison University; provide networking opportunities and disseminate information about retail trends and issues to retailing
professionals.

The Center's mission is "to promote economic literacy in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia." The center accomplishes this mission with a program of outreach and research. The outreach is funded as a sponsored program of Shenandoah Valley Economic Education, Inc., a 501(c)3 corporation that promotes teaching about economics and the free enterpise system in the area. The Center is an affiliate of the National Council of Economic Education and the Virginia Council on Economic Education. The Center serves K-12 teachers, primarily in the public schools of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. The Center also serves a secondary area that includes Shenandoah and Page counties, and opens its workshops on a space-available basis to educators from elsewhere in Virginia.

 

Center for Entrepreneurship

Founded in July, 1985 as an interdisciplinary unit of the College of Business of James Madison University, the Center for Entrepreneurship (CFE) is the focus and originating point of a broad variety of business-related activities with special emphasis on venture creation and entrepreneurship. The Center's mission is to promote, foster, and perpetuate the American entrepreneurial tradition, and to strengthen Virginia's economy by encouraging innovation and the creation of new enterprises. Since 1995 the JMU Entrepreneurship Program has been ranked as one of the "Top 10 Up-and-Coming Entrepreneurship Programs" by Success Magazine. JMU's ranking improved in 1996 and again in 1997. The Center for Entrepreneurship is the home of the Student Business Counselor Institute (SBCI) which offers business and technical assistance counseling to members of the small business community.

The Center for Environment, Health, and Safety offers continuing education and training courses in such areas as Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) and others of interest to EH&S managers and staff. The Center serves environment, health, and safety managers and staff in industry and government.

 

Center for High Performance Manufacturing

The VT/JMU Center for High Performance Manufacturing (CHPM) has a Rapid Prototyping and Tooling Laboratory located in the Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT) Department at JMU. The ISAT laboratory focuses on rapid prototyping and tooling, materials development, and injection molding. The CHPM research emphasis at JMU is to synergistically combine these technologies into a flexible molding capability for plastic prototyping, injection molding mold manufacturing, and limited-run production of plastic parts via injection molding. CHPM laboratories at JMU are used for undergraduate and graduate education, externally sponsored research programs, and are available for industrial use on a fee-for-service basis. All types of regional, state, national, and international companies who manufacture plastic parts or metal molds benefit from partnering with the laboratory. In addition, small to mid-sized companies who need limited-run manufacturing or prototyping capabilities benefit from partnering with the laboratory.

The Center for Materials Science offers a minor and concentration in materials science that enhance students' preparation for employment and advanced study in the rapidly growing materials industry. The CISAT International Center promotes international and interdisciplinary collaboration, education, scholarship, and cultural exchange with other countries. CLEP Testing Center

The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) provides standardized testing for specific colleges courses. Individuals who achieve minimum scores may request academic credit from participating colleges and universities. The Bachelor of Individualized Study (BIS) program at JMU accepts CLEP credit. Individuals who desire testing should contact the Center to schedule specific testing dates. All tests are taken online and scores are immediately available. The CLEP testing center serves students of the Shenandoah Valley, including those enrolled in programs at Blue Ridge Community College, Mary Baldwin College, Eastern Mennonite University, and JMU.

The Center is a collaborative effort that includes several Virginia universities (James Madison University (JMU), George Mason University(GMU), Hampton University, and Virginia Tech(VT), along with industry and government. The Center conducts applied research and technology transfer to increase the competitiveness of Virginia's information security industry and workforce as well as to address the security needs of Virginia's IT industry and users. The Center's current activities include six projects and approximately 15 individuals at Virginia universities. The mission of the CISC is to enhance information security responsibly by conducting technology and policy research; educating the public, policy makers, and a new generation of professionals; and, facilitating technology transfer among governments, businesses, and universities.

CCN provides services, companionship, and support for those who care for frail older family members. CCN also provides services for those with memory loss or Alzheimer's disease. CCN can help to give caregivers a break and provide valuable time to care for themselves, as well as their loved ones.

For hundreds of Shenandoah Valley residents, linguistic and cultural barriers seriously compromise the quality of health care that they receive. To address this challenge, the Blue Ridge AHEC at JMU provides training to bilingual persons who then interpret for limited English proficient persons during health and medical care encounters. The schedules interpreters upon request from area health care providers.

Counseling and Psychological Services offers friendly, affordable care to persons of all ages. Graduate students in JMU's Department of Psychology work professional Care Team, to provide quality counseling services for you and your family. Confidential counseling is available to assist adults, families and children who are experiencing: Depression, Anxiety, Marital tensions, Parent-child conflicts, and/or Work or school difficulties. All fees are based on a sliding scale, depending on gross income and number of dependents in the home. Fees and payment plans are discussed in advance.
