HIST 501 OP02 The Electoral College and Presidential Elections

Course Description:  To aid students in developing a more complete understanding of the method in which Presidents are actually elected, the way the electoral college structure has shaped events in key Presidential elections, and the major proposals for altering the system that are currently being considered.  Much attention will be paid to the rationale behind the creation of the electoral college and the ways its operation has been modified by amendment, custom, and state action through our history.  The ways in which the key institutions functioned in the elections of 1800, 1824, 1976, 1888, and 2000 will also be examined in detail. The strategic considerations for both candidates in plotting their electoral campaigns for the 2008 election will also be examined.  Through the use of primary and secondary sources, PowerPoints, film clips, and lectures, students will gain insight into how participants have used the structure of the electoral system as a fulcrum from which to introduce ideas and advance causes, and to influence the outcome of key presidential elections.
