EDUC 501 OP12 Integrating Science & Math in Technology

Course Description:  This course is designed to accomplish one major goal for the teachers who will participate:  increased alignment of the math and science content defined by the Virginia Standards of Learning with instructional delivery using robotics and GPS/GIS technology.  The course will be delivered in workshop format.  Collaborating with JMU teacher candidates, they will take this knowledge into their classrooms and use the technology as they teach science and mathematics.  Throughout the course, teachers will be supported by instructional staff from JMU and school division administrators as the teachers implement new strategies using technology.

EXED 604 OP02 Practicum in Autism Spectrum Disorders

Course Description:   This course is designed to provide in-depth practical application of the knowledge and skills acquired during the preceding coursework in autism.  Students will apply skill sin assessment, planning, implementation and the review and revision of programming specifically developed to address the needs of student learners or clients with a disability along the autism spectrum.  Areas addressed can include learning needs, self-care issues, communication and social sills needs, sensory planning, behavioral challenges, positive behavioral supports, Function Behavioral Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plan Development, and overall program implementation and monitoring.  Students will collect data, develop lessons and behavioral or self-care plans and work with team members to implement, monitor and revise plans.  A range of instructional methodologies and techniques will be emphasized throughout the course.  Pre-requisites include the three courses in the autism certificate program.

Course Description:  This course emphasizes methods of teaching compensatory skills, the core curriculum, and technology for use by students who are blind and visually impaired.  It addresses technology for use by students who are blind and visually impaired.  Use of technology by students who are blind and visually impaired will be addressed.  Information is provided on adaptations within various educational programs and adaptation of general education classroom materials and procedures for use with blind and low vision children and youth.

Course Description:  The assignment for this course is designed to facilitate student's application and transfer of knowledge to persons with visual impairments.  The student will assess an individual with visual impairment using an appropriate assessment.  The information gained from the assessment will then be used to develop IEP goals and objectives for the individual.  One of the target objectives will be chosen and an instructional program will be designed to address that objective.  Students will implement the program and gather student performance data, use the data to evaluate the program, and make needed changes.

Course Description:  The course content focuses on the seminal and current issues related to the recognition and education of giftedness in individuals from birth through the life span.  Participants will examine the critical issues facing the field of gifted education as well as future directions.  Specific topics include:  (a) Collaboration Between Gifted and General Education; (b) The Psycho-Social Adjustment and Guidance of Gifted Learners; (c) The Plight of Underserved Populations of Gifted Learners; (d) Educational Programming Models for Gifted Education; and (e) The approaches used to measure and assess giftedness.

Course Description:   An instructional program on the history and principles of American constitutional democracy for elementary, middle and high school students.  The program is based on curricular materials developed by the Center of Civic Education and acclaimed by leading educators.  Simulated congressional hearings, excellent for performance assessment, are built into the curriculum.  At the high school level, classes may choose to enter a competition structured as a simulated hearing where their knowledge of the Constitution is tested.
