Admission Information

Prospective Students

If you are admitted to JMU and indicate a preference for a major in the College of Business, you will not automatically be admitted to the College of Business. You must formally apply for admission to the college before majoring in a CoB program. You may submit an application for admission during the semester in which you are completing the lower-level BBA core courses.

Effective for all COB 300 Applicants Intending to Take COB 300 Fall 2011 or Later:

Any student admitted to JMU can declare any major offered by the College of Business.  However, students are not formally accepted into the College of Business until certain requirements are met.  Requirements to continue pursuing a B.B.A. degree are described below.

Students are formally admitted into the College of Business as a B.B.A. major and permitted to register for COB 300 when the following requirements are met:

1.  A completed application for admission into the College of Business is submitted to the COB ASC according to the following schedule:

October 1 for upcoming Spring semester
March 1 for upcoming Summer session and Fall semesters

2.  All 10 lower-level B.B.A. core courses are successfully completed;

3.  A GPA of 2.7 in the B.B.A. lower-level core courses (excluding MATH 205) is achieved;

4.  Admission is granted within one calendar year of the applicant's first application.  Two applications, in consecutive semesters of enrollment, are permitted.

The B.B.A. core GPA is calculated using grades earned in the B.B.A. lower-level core excluding calculus (MATH 205 or MATH 235).  Only grades earned at JMU will be used.  The university policy for calculating repeat-credit and repeat-forgiveness will be followed.

Students with a 2.7 B.B.A. core GPA are assured admission into the College of Business and COB 300.  Students who meet all of the requirements above but fail to achieve a 2.7 B.B.A. core GPA will be admitted to the College of Business and COB 300 based on B.B.A. core GPA ranking, and pending resources and space availability.

*Requirements for admission into the College of Business are effective based on when a student intends to enroll in COB 300.  Students are advised to consult the College of Business Academic Services Center for current requirements.

Admission to the CoB permits you to enroll in COB 300 and be formally admitted to a major. Some CoB majors may impose standards that exceed those of the CoB. If this is the case, you must meet both the College of Business requirements and the requirements of the major in which you are interested.

The above requirements do not apply to students who are enrolled in the B.S. or B.A. degree program in economics or to those enrolled in the B.S. degree program in quantitative finance.

Current JMU Students with Non-Business Majors

If you are a current JMU student seeking to change your current major to one in the College of Business, you must be in good academic standing at the university on the date you submit a Change or Declaration of Major form, which is available in the offices of all CoB academic programs.

This policy affects students desiring to change their major to one of the following: accounting, computer information systems, economics (B.B.A. degree only), finance, hospitality and tourism management, international business, management, and marketing.

If you are a non-College of Business student desiring to declare a CoB minor, you must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.000 or higher on the date you submit a Declaration of Minor form. This policy applies to the following minors: Chinese business studies, computer information systems, economics, and management science.
