Bob Golson has been a prominent leader in the University Recreation Center for over 20 years, starting out in the Intramural Sports sector and moving all the way up to Associate Director for Facilities and Operations.  In each of these roles and all the ones in between, Bob has mentored hundreds of student sports officials, operations supervisors, and professional staff members with the mindset of servant leadership and community focus.  One UREC colleague stated, “I have observed his leadership by example in putting the University above self, and without reservation I think that he is one of the most deserving staff on this campus for recognition. I am a better employee and person because of Bob and I’m sure many others would say the same.”.  Within UREC, Bob has also served on the Homecoming 5K, Risk Management, Celebration, JM-U Appreciation Day and ONE Giving Campaign committees.  Within JMU, Bob has served as a facilitator for the Madison Collaborative, Faculty Chair for OSARP, and an adjunct faculty member in the Kinesiology Department.  He also is heavily involved in the Harrisonburg community through their Lion’s Club chapter.  Bob has presented at multiple state and national conferences, sharing with others his invaluable experiences and wisdom.  He is constantly touching lives wherever he goes, inspiring people to exceed their own expectations.  He cares deeply about others, and strives to model how to live life to the fullest every day.  There was no doubt when the committee read of his unique combination of empathy, determination, and service that Bob Golson was a shining example of the “All Together One” spirit that James Madison University was founded upon.  We hope that this award can be a small thank you for the countless times you went the extra mile for this university and its people.
