Dave is a person who embodies the values of love, dedication, and upliftment in everything he does. He is deeply committed to the development and resources for students, and he is involved in the community in ways that truly make a difference. Dave has connections on JMU’s campus and in the field of Student Affairs, and he focuses on ways to continuously provide nourishment to them. For students in the College Student Personnel Administrators graduate program, he is a great connector, helping them connect with each other and their future in the field.

As one of Dave’s former students wrote in their nomination, “I can say firsthand how he takes a very direct and involved approach in assuring his students are cared for and supported. He takes the time to make each person feel seen and heard, and when he greets you, he asks how you are doing, and he really means it. He doesn’t just build community because it’s part of his job; he does it because he believes in the power and importance of community at his core.”

Dave is known as a great storyteller, sharing insights with students about the world, the community, and the field of Student Affairs. He inspires his students to do their best, and many of them have said they hope to be just like Dave when they retire.

Dave's passion for lifelong learning is infectious, and he is always teaching others something new or learning from them. He never desires to have the spotlight and is always the first to recognize others’ work. He understands the value of having all hands on deck to produce a cohesive and extraordinary outcome. Dave understands the importance of collaboration and how much can be accomplished when working together.

Under Dave's leadership, the University Unions have become a community hub that provides a home-grown feeling throughout the spaces and resources provided to JMU students, faculty, and staff. His unique approach to connection with others, understanding that when we are truly in community with others, we all benefit together, has had a transformative effect on the JMU community. Dave is an inspiration to staff and students alike. He exudes compassion and truly cares about his staff, and his actions align with his words. He has created a community of caring Student Affairs professionals who have become lifelong friends of his. In addition to his work on campus, he has been a leader within the Association of College Unions International, serving on the board several times.

In conclusion, Dave Barnes is a truly exceptional person who has made a profound impact on the JMU community. He exemplifies the concept of “All Together One” and has created an inclusive community within the Unions. Under his leadership, many innovative quality programs and services have been initiated and continue to thrive today. Dave is leaving a legacy of mentorship, instruction, and friendship that will be felt for generations to come.
