A major is a set of required and elective courses that, when completed by a student, signifies a degree of preparation in a specific field of study. The credit hour requirements for the major are set by colleges and academic units and consist of no less than 30 credit hours.

All students must declare a major by the beginning of their sophomore year.  Transfer students who enter JMU with 30 or more credit hours must declare a major upon acceptance to the university.
