Why did you choose JMU?

Deciding to go to JMU was one of the best decisions I have ever made, and JMU was really the only school I wanted to go to. The business program I attended back home is well known in China, and from reading about JMU's College of Business, I knew that JMU would be a very good fit for me. What really caught my attention was JMU's model: "Be the Change". Although, working up the courage to travel to a foreign place and not knowing anyone was quite scary at first, I decided to trust my instincts, take a chance... and "Be the Change!"

What is your favorite class?

Two of my favorite classes are COB 202 (interpersonal skills class in college of business) by Dr. Charette, and a leadership class taught by Dr. Mark Warner. Both of the class changed my life. I figured out that a lot of conflict can be solved by having good communication skills, no matter in what context. I was also taught to use the skills to do good for people, to be a good leader, and to help other people enhance their quality of relationships, but not to manipulate people. I appreciate the opportunity to learn from great people.

Besides studying, how do you occupy your time?

JMU provides a vast amount of different clubs and activities one can choose from. I am a member of Make Your Mark on Madison student leadership organization, and currently I am the head of Public Relations for the Chinese Student and Scholars Association. I am working for JMU’s Counseling and Student Development Center as an assistant for International Student Services program which is a totally new program at JMU. When I am not participating in these JMU activities, I love walking around and exploring the beautiful city of Harrisonburg, which JMU is located in. From the coffee shops, to the small specialty craft stores, Harrisonburg offers comfort and relaxation. Saturday morning's open-aired farmers market allows me and other JMU students to connect with the local Harrisonburg population.

What do you like the most about JMU?

JMU is a really supportive university where I can get genuine help from faculty, friends, and even strangers. Everyone is ready to "make your day". The JMU community is so strong, and there is a great sense of school spirit pride, especially during football session. I like the diversity which adds charm to JMU, and I appreciate the help from the International Student and Scholars Services staff They give me a sense of safety, and make JMU my second home.

JMU will make you a better person and the knowledge you gain from here will help you make right decisions. You will meet some excellent professors and friends who will have a lifelong positive influence on you.  I cannot encourage you enough to take this opportunity, and along with me and my fellow classmates, be the change. I look forward to seeing you around campus.
