The following dates and deadlines are important to remember when applying for admission to James Madison University. Although our freshman and transfer application deadlines are postmark deadlines, the Office of Admissions encourages students to submit their application as early as possible. The postmark deadlines are for the application and all corresponding material (transcripts, essay, etc.).

The fee of $50.00 applies to all applications and must be submitted with your application.  We cannot process applications without payment of the application fee.

Freshmen Applicants:

Early Action (nonbinding)

November 1 - Application deadline for all pieces(application, transcripts, etc.)
Mid-January - Admission decisions mailed
May 1 - Intent to enroll deposit deadline

Early Action is more competitive than the Regular Decision process. To be admitted through Early Action, a student needs to be superior in curriculum, grades, test scores and extracurricular activities. For the last two years, 35 to 42 percent of the students deferred from Early Action to Regular Decision were eventually admitted. Students who apply through the Early Action process do not have an advantage over students who apply Regular Decision.

Regular Decision

January 15 - Application deadline for all Admissions materials
Early April - Admission decisions mailed
May 1 - Intent to enroll deposit deadline

Because Early Action is more competitive than Regular Decision, students who apply through Regular Decision are not at a disadvantage. For the 2011 Freshman class, over 90 percent of our applicants were competitive but only 57 percent were admitted.

Transfer Applicants:

Fall Term

March 1 - Application deadline for all pieces (application, transcripts, etc.)
Late April - Admission decisions mailed
Early May - Intent to enroll deposit deadline

Spring Term

October 15 - Application deadline for all pieces (application, transcripts, etc.)
Mid November - Admission decisions mailed
Early December - Intent to enroll deposit deadline

Summer Term

February 1 - Application deadline for all pieces (application, transcripts, etc.)
Early April - Admission decisions mailed
Early May - Intent to enroll deposit deadline
