Beginner Olympic Fencing Camp

Dates: June 22 - 26, 2026 from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM each day

Grades: Rising 5th - 8th

Program Fee: $225

Students will learn the basics of fencing (i.e. modern sword fighting) as practiced by Olympic athletes, specifically how to fence with an Epee. One of only five sports contested at every summer Olympic Games since 1896, fencing challenges participants both physically and mentally in a safe and fun environment. All standard practice and safety gear will be provided. Activities will include: instruction in techniques and tactics, rules and refereeing, safety and equipment; conditioning exercises and practice drills; fencing-based games; sparring matches; and a tournament to show off everything learned at the end.

Intermediate Olympic Fencing Camp

Dates: June 22 - 26, 2026 from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM each day

Grades: Rising 5th - 9th

Program Fee: $225

Prerequisite: In order to participate in the Intermediate Olympic Fencing Camp, campers must have completed Beginner Olympic Fencing with instructor Will Brown (through the College for Kids program or last summer's Beginner Olympic Fencing Camp).

Students will learn more advanced epee techniques as practiced by Olympic athletes. One of only five sports contested at every summer Olympic Games since 1896, fencing challenges participants both physically and mentally in a safe and fun environment. All standard practice and safety gear will be provided. Activities will include: instruction in techniques and tactics, rules and refereeing, safety and equipment; conditioning exercises and practice drills; fencing-based games; sparring matches; and a tournament to show off everything learned at the end.

Meet the fencing instructor- Will Brown!
Will Brown began fencing in college and quickly fell in love with the sport. With over 20 years of experience and more than a decade teaching with the School of Professional & Continuing Education's Youth Programs, he is passionate about introducing young people to fencing and helping them build confidence, focus, and resilience.
 
A former USA Fencing competitor rated in all three weapons, Will now serves as an advisor to the JMU Fencing Club. When he’s not fencing, he works at JMU, is finishing his doctorate in Strategic Leadership Studies, and enjoys spending time with his wife, Kathryn, their two cats, and friends—especially over board games and good food.
