The Opening Doors Rally on March 20th was a fantastic event filled with many highpoint moments. The positive energy was palpable from the 175 attendees throughout the program.

Class of 1992 alumna and former Miss Virginia, Pat Southall Smith shared her personal story of loss and redemption in an inspiring address that was poignant and relevant to all. Pat revealed how she came to be a champion for women overcoming challenges, finding their passions and achieving their dreams.

JMU’s First Lady, Mary Ann Alger, asked guests to reflect on what philanthropy means to them and the many ways that women give back. Women for Madison Vice Chair, Beth Bliss listed a number of achievements and contributions made by JMU women over the years and how women have metaphorically held the door open for those coming up behind. She emphasized the need for the women of Madison to be engaged and invested more now than ever. Council Member Chiquita King called guests to action with the question, “which door will you open?”
President Jon Alger showed his support to Women for Madison and expressed the critical need for women to be involved in the future of the university and The Madison Plan. Student shout-outs from seniors Lakayla Bonaparte, Sarah Ward and Caitlin McAvoy were inspiring and sincerely appreciative. A cappella group, The BluesTones and Duke Dog added energy and fun moments of purple pride! Watch for news of upcoming events and your chance to open a door.
