JMU is nothing without its traditions—and what better way to celebrate them than with an alumni-organized taco bar! On November 2, as part of the 2021 Homecoming week festivities, students in Festival could attend the taco bar and pick up some JMU swag as well. Giveaways included JMU pom-poms, beads, bags and, most importantly, a poster listing all of the Madison Traditions that the JMU Alumni Association strives to uphold.

A tradition itself, the taco bar attracted a modest but excited group of students. “Our student committee, The JMU Alumni Association Student Committee, has subcommittees that plan student events,” said Ryan Boals, an Alumni Relations Coordinator and 2017 JMU Graduate. “This is one of our main student events.”

Boals also emphasized that the importance of this event lies in the promotion of JMU traditions. “This event is really special because it is celebrating traditions at JMU, such as Dukes from Day One when you get your fight song T-shirt, our Senior Candle Lighting and toast for seniors who are leaving, our Fifty Days ‘Till Graduation Celebration, Homecoming, and all of these traditions on campus for students to celebrate and have spirit,” he said. “That’s what’s special about this—plus it’s free tacos!”
