Classicists Host Upcoming Colloquium
NewsOn Tuesday, April 7 at 5:30 pm, Dr. Ian Hensley, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at JMU, will give a talk on "The Fundamentals of Ancient Stoicism" at The Arts at 131 W Grace Street. A description of the talk is as follows:
Stoicism is popular. Many find the writings of later Roman Stoics, such as Seneca, Epictetus, and Emperor Marcus Aurelius, to be valuable guides to everyday life. Yet Stoicism was a rigorous philosophical school and movement, which was founded in the intellectual battleground of Athens in the third century BCE. Idiosyncratic and complicated philosophical positions underlie the counsel and aphorisms of later Stoics, yet none of the early Stoics' treatises have survived to the present day. We will explore some of the early Stoics' philosophy and the evidence we have for their views.
