Ben Katz Wins Outstanding Student Award
NewsSenior philosophy major Ben Katz has been named the 2026 Outstanding Student in Philosophy at James Madison University. Katz will graduate with his bachelor's degree this spring and plans to work in the progressive banking industry following graduation. In recent years, Katz has been most interested in the practical side of philosophy and its impact on improving the real world. When asked about his philosophical studies, Katz commented, “I have really enjoyed studying philosophy at JMU because it has allowed me to develop my critical thinking skills. Now, when I hear an argument, I can quickly tell when there are internal contradictions or logical fallacies at play. It has also helped me enjoy my everyday life more, allowing me to recognize what is within my control and what is outside it, and let go of things I can't control. This has allowed me to enjoy my college experience more than if I had not taken philosophy classes.” Katz also plans to present his original research paper on philosophical issues in hedonism at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research in Richmond later this month. Congratulations, Ben!
