Introducing Virtual Parking Permits!

News

JMU Parking and Transit Services has gone virtual! Beginning with the 2022-2023 academic year, physical parking permits are no longer needed to park on campus. Using License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology, vehicles that have paid to park on campus will be identified by capturing license plate images, thus eliminating the need to display any other kind of parking credential. In other words, your license plate is your permit!

Using Virtual Parking Permits – What You Need to Know

  • Accuracy is essential when registering for a virtual permit! Please be sure to enter your license plate number and vehicle description correctly in order to avoid unnecessary citations.

  • Vehicles must be parked in such a way that one of their license plates is visible from the parking lot traffic aisles. If your vehicle does not have a front license plate, and you would prefer to back in to or pull though parking spaces, you will need to obtain a special vanity plate from Parking and Transit Services for a one-time fee of $10.00, and display it on the front of your vehicle.

  • Parking allocations throughout campus will be unaffected by the transition to virtual permits. Faculty/staff, commuter, and resident virtual permits will have identical privileges to physical permits issued in previous years.

  • Regulations for pay stations are not affected by the transition to virtual permits. Permits are not required at pay stations, but time must be paid for at pay stations or via the ParkMobile app.

How to Register Your Vehicle

  1. Go to the Parking and Transit Services website at https://www.jmu.edu/parking.

  2. On jmu.edu/parking, click either “STUDENTS” or “FACULTY & STAFF’ and then choose “Manage My Parking Account.”

  3. Login with your JMU e-ID and Password.

  4. Select “Order Permit.”

  5. Review and agree to the Terms of Service.

  6. Follow the step-by-step instructions to enter your license plate number and pay your permit fee.

When you have completed the purchase process, you will receive a receipt by email. You are now registered to park on campus!
