Dingledine and Garber Construction Communication - 8/24/2023

News

Dear residents of Garber and Dingledine halls,

As you are aware, your residence halls are adjacent to an exciting housing project in the Village area. As you can imagine, there is a lot of work to be done for the building to be constructed and opened on time. To be transparent about the schedule and the work required during this project, Residence Life, Facilities Planning and Construction and the SB Ballard Construction team wanted to share what work we anticipate during the fall semester. Please see below a list of activities that should be occurring on the construction site this fall:

Beginning Monday, August 28, 2023, and continuing for three weeks, Columbia Gas will be installing a new gas line along Ikenberry Service Drive to serve the new Village Housing project.  The work will include:

  • Saw cutting the road
  • Digging the 2’ wide trench
  • Removing soil and rock, if present
  • Installing the gas line
  • Backfilling the trench
  • Paving where the trench was excavated
  • Tying into the existing gas line at the top and bottom of the construction site along Ikenberry Service Drive

Other work that will be done during the Fall Semester will be:

  • Installation of underground utilities to service the building
  • Mass excavation - includes removing soil and rock to establish the building pad
  • Ground improvements - installation of sub-grade piers
  • Installation of concrete foundations
  • Beginning to install vertical masonry for stair and elevator towers

This work will involve heavy equipment, possible rock removal, and hauling of materials off-site.  Work hours will be Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.  There is a possibility of weekend work.  Weekend work and anticipated loud work is scheduled to begin after 8:00 a.m. Additional information including live images of the site can be found on our website.

We understand there may be times during the project's scope when this work will be disruptive, but we appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to create an outstanding residential facility. If you have questions regarding the project, please direct them to The Office of Residence Life, Business Operations, busops@jmu.edu or 540-568-7576.

Sincerely,
The Office of Residence Life
