Update: ADA Title II Accessibility Compliance Deadline

Notices

What changed federally?

On Monday, April 20 the U.S. Department of Justice released an extension to the compliance deadline for the federal digital accessibility standards under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title II. The new deadline for “large public entities” to comply with the updated regulations has moved from this Friday, April 24, 2026 to April 26, 2027. We are still evaluating how this change in federal regulations impacts Virginia law and will provide updates when available.

What stays the same?

While the compliance deadline has shifted, our mission remains unchanged. At JMU, digital accessibility is not just about meeting a future legal date; it is about the students, faculty, and staff who need to access our content today.

University units should continue making steady progress toward improving the accessibility of websites, documents, course content, and digital tools to meet existing requirements. This extension provides additional time to strengthen our accessibility practices, refine content workflows, and expand available resources.

Providing accessible digital content remains a priority and is essential to fostering an inclusive environment. These efforts support JMU’s goal of ensuring that all users can access and benefit from the university’s digital resources and learning experiences.

Additional updates will be shared in this notice and on the Digital Accessibility site as new information and resources become available.
