Seeking Volunteers Ages 55 and Over for Sleep and Metabolism Research

Notices

Researchers at James Madison University are conducting a study to understand how a single night of sleep restriction may influence the body’s response to a single meal in middle-aged and older adults.

We are seeking individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • 55 years of age or older
  • Do not have any major metabolic disease
  • Are interested in learning more about their metabolic health and physical activity habits

What does the study involve?

  • Visit 1 (~30 minutes)
    • Complete questionnaires about health history, physical activity, and sleep habits and receive an accelerometer to track physical activity habits
  • Visits 2 and 3 (~4.5 hours)
    • Consume a chocolate pie
    • Undergo simple finger stick blood tests and provide saliva samples

Additional requirements

  • One night of sleep restriction (<4 hours of sleep) before visit 2 or 3

Beneftis

  • Free chocolate pie!
  • You will receive results about your blood vessel health and blood sugar/fat levels, both before and after eating. This simple information can help you understand your heart health as you age. All results will be explained in easy-to-understand terms
  • Relax, read, watch tv, etc for most of the lab visits
  • Supporting student research

If interested, please contact Kate Houle (houleke@dukes.jmu.edu).
