Women's History Month with Furious Flower Poetry Center

Furious Flower Poetry Center is collaborating with CMSS, AAAD, WGSS, and the Department of English to host multiple events that highlight the contributions and accomplishments of contemporary and historical Black women poets. We invite you and your students to join us for these three incredible offerings.
Screening: In Search of Phillis Wheatley Peters*
Tuesday, March 24th | 5:30-7:30PM | Taylor 306
Join us for a screening of In Search of Phillis Wheatley Peters, a film offering a new lens on the life of the first Black person to become a published poet in the United States. The screening will also feature a reading of Phillis Wheatley’s work and a Q&A with the directors and Furious Flower Founder, Dr. Joanne Gabbin, who also appears in the film. This event is offered in collaboration with CMSS, AAAD, WGSS, and JMU's Department of English.

Poetry Reading with Poet India Lena González*
Thursday, March 26th | 5-6:30PM | Taylor 405
Multi-disciplinary poet India Lena González will serve as our March 2026 reader for Women’s History Month. A poet and award-winning choreographer, dancer, and actor, González brings a dynamic, embodied approach to the page and the stage. González will read from her work, followed by a book signing. A student workshop will take place immediately after this reading in SSC 1310.

Creative Writing Workshop for JMU Students with Poet India Lena González
Thursday, March 26th | 7-8PM | SSC 1310
After the reading, students are invited to head over to SSC 1310 to join India Lena Gonzalez for a Creative Writing workshop! During this 1-hour session, participants can expect a generative, discussion-centered experience. The workshop may include close reading of selected poems, reflective or creative writing exercises, and conversation about poetry as a practice of observation, introspection, and connection.
No prior experience with poetry is necessary. We welcome the poetry-curious with open arms, and attendees are encouraged to engage at their own comfort level. Walk-ins welcome but registration encouraged! This event is offered in collaboration with CMSS.
