Participants needed for Apple watch and noise study

Notices

Researchers at the Translational Auditory Research Lab (TARL) in the Dept. Of Communication Sciences & Disorders here at JMU are exploring the use of Apple Watch in quantifying individual noise exposure background to better understand the effects of noise exposure on humans.

Who are we looking for?

  • Aged 18-60 years
  • Use an iPhone to which their Apple Watch is linked
  • Wear an Apple Watch (any generation) for at least 80% of their waking hours for the past year.

What does it involve?

Participation will require one 60-minute (max) visit to our lab located on the 5th floor of the Health and Behavioral Sciences Bldg. (Room 5016) where:

  • The performance of your Apple Watch in measuring sound levels will be evaluated with standard sound level meters in a sound-treated booth
  • You will receive a hearing screening
  • You will complete a validated Noise Exposure Questionnaire
  • Your environmental noise levels measured by your Apple Watch and audio headphone use will be extracted from your iPhone’s Health App Data.

Incentives: Participants will receive a free hearing screening and learn about their noise exposure background.
