Join us for the sixth annual Youth Igniting Change Institute (YIC) for rising 9th-12th graders. This year, youth will delve into the current generation gap in the United States by examining perceptions of age and by exploring their own ancestral strength. Participants will understand the impact of generational trauma while gaining tools for healing and learning strategies for interrupting cycles of violence. Participants will also learn best practices for intergenerational dialogue, communication, and empathy, and will connect with older adults with experience in activism and civic engagement. Local artists and youth development workers from JMU’s Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services and the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Youth Council will work with participants to address LGBTQ and Enviornmental issues through a generational lense. Youth will also explore strategies for self-care, healing, and sustainability. If you are a teen or know a teen looking to better understand the current generational divide in the United States, we hope you will join us for this engaging leadership opportunity.

Collaborating with local artists, participants learn how art is used as a tool for social change. This year, YIC is excited to announce a partnership with MIMA Music (Modern Improvisational Music Appreciation), who will lead participants through a creative music and lyrical process. MIMA facilitators will engage other local artists to offer additional avenues for artistic exploration of the theme. No music-making experience is required to fully participate! Through this process, participants learn self-awareness, self-expression, and leadership skills. On Wednesday, participants will take an art and social engagement focused field trip to Charlottesville, Virginia to enhance and deepen their learning. YIC will end with a presentation from participants open to family, friends, and the community.

Held at JMU’s Icehouse (127 West Bruce Street. Harrisonburg, VA 22807) Room 117, YIC will run from 9:00am-2:00pm Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 8:00am-5:00pm Wednesday (fieldtrip), and will end Friday at 12:00 with a presentation and lunch.

Youth Igniting Change is FREE for participants. Transportation can be provided for participants living in the Harrisonburg/Rockingham area. Transportation will be provided for ALL participants for the field trip.

Lunch is provided each day.
