STEM students from Korea visit Merck through IIE 's KORUS program
News
In collaboration with the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT), undergraduate students from South Korea studying at universities across the United States visited JMU as part of the Korea-U.S. Special Exchange Program for STEM Students (KORUS). As part of their year abroad, KORUS participants engage in enrichment field trips to select institutions, and JMU was chosen to host one of these experiences.

During their three-day visit, students participated in a variety of activities designed to broaden their academic and professional perspectives while exploring graduate study and career pathways. The program included campus tours, faculty-led sessions on career development, and discussions focused on navigating opportunities in STEM fields. Students also visited Merck, where they toured the training center and participated in a panel with employees, gaining valuable insights into careers in healthcare and related industries.
Students heard from Korean faculty members Dr. Seung Hee Han, Dr. Sungjai Hong, and Dr. Shin Ji Kang, along with guest faculty member Dr. Young B. Choi, who shared their career journeys to the United States. They also attended an entertaining session led by Dr. Sarah Cabán on how U.S. pharmaceutical companies market medicine. Another highlight was time spent with Provost Bob Kolvoord, whose academic background and career trajectory resonated strongly with the group and offered valuable perspective on leadership and career development in STEM.
Overall, the visit provided a unique experience for both the visiting students and the JMU community, strengthening international partnerships and fostering future STEM collaboration. Students enjoyed exploring JMU’s campus, noting the blossoming trees and welcoming, village-like atmosphere. They were particularly impressed by the strong sense of community, especially in contrast to the urban campuses where many are currently studying. Although brief, the visit was meaningful and memorable, and JMU looks forward to welcoming KORUS students again in the future.
