The Center for Global Engagement Hosts Study Abroad Week
News
Every year, the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) hosts Study Abroad Week, a series of events designed to introduce students to international learning opportunities and provide practical guidance on how to pursue them. Held February 9-13, this year’s programming brought together advisors, returned study abroad participants, and curious students for a week focused on exploration and connection. Through multiple interactive sessions, students learned about programs and asked questions. Events such as Taste of Study Abroad and Stories from Abroad offered spaces for student engagement.

The week featured a range of opportunities designed to support students at different stages of the study abroad process. On February 9, the Internships Abroad Poster Exhibit highlighted international internship possibilities and pathways. Taste of Study Abroad followed on February 11, creating a space for students to sample food from around the world while learning about global programs. On February 12, Drop-In Advising sessions provided personalized guidance for those seeking one-on-one support, and the week concluded with Stories from Abroad on February 13, where students shared reflections from their time overseas.
Taste of Study Abroad
One of the week’s most dynamic events, Taste of Study Abroad, created an interactive environment where students could speak directly with program directors and student advisors. As students sampled food from around the world, they had the chance to ask questions about specific locations and gain a clearer understanding of how studying abroad could fit into their academic plans. The event connected international learning with helpful guidance in a welcoming setting. At the start of the event, students who arrived with uncertainty left with a better understanding of their options and the confidence to take the next steps.
Stories from Abroad
While Taste of Study Abroad focused on exploration and questions, Stories from Abroad centered on reflection and storytelling. During this session, returned students shared personal stories of their time overseas, offering insight into the realities of living and learning in another country.

Speakers talked about cultural discoveries, unexpected challenges, and moments of personal growth that shaped their perspectives. Some described navigating language barriers or adapting to unfamiliar customs, while others highlighted meaningful relationships formed with classmates and local communities. These stories provided realistic expectations, highlighting both the academic and personal impact of studying abroad. For many listeners, hearing authentic student stories made studying abroad feel more attainable.
Supporting Events and Student Engagement
Beyond the featured sessions, several other interactive events gave students practical and creative ways to explore study abroad. The Internships Abroad Poster Exhibit, Flavors from Abroad, and Drop-In Advising also provided opportunities for peer learning and individualized guidance. The annual Study Abroad T-Shirt Design Contest was also part of this program. Throughout the week, everyone had the chance to vote for their favorite design. The selected design will be printed on the new Study Abroad shirts, serving as a reminder of JMU’s global engagement.
Through these experiences, the Study Abroad Week highlighted how global learning expands academic possibilities and promotes personal growth. As interest continues to build, CGE encourages all students to explore the opportunities available to them. With accessible guidance and a wide range of programs, studying abroad remains a realistic and transformative path for Dukes ready to engage with the world.
