JMU Foundation 50th Anniversary Celebration

Foundation

May 22, 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of the JMU Foundation by the Virginia State Corporation Commission. To commemorate the historical event, the Foundation staff along with past and current foundation board members, community guests, donors and many employees from the JMU community joined together in the Hall of Presidents at the new D-Hall.  Foundation President and CEO Warren Coleman chose this spot to hold the event because the old Gibbons Hall was the site of the first Foundation Board Meeting, held on August 13, 1969.  The nostalgia was evident as the attendees perused memorabilia including gifts-in-kind, photographs, minutes from the first board meeting and financial reports. The guests viewed a rotating slide show of important people in the foundation’s history, land acquisition, gifts-in-kind, and historical and financial information regarding the endowment growth and scholarships. The celebration closed with remarks given by JMU President Jonathan Alger, the current JMU Foundation Chairperson Linda Cross, and Mr. Coleman, followed by a champagne toast to the next 50 years and beyond.
