Foundation Board of Trustees Meeting – February 10, 2017

The JMU Foundation committee and Board meetings were held on Friday, February 10 at the Festival Conference center.  Mr. Warren Coleman, board chair, opened the meeting with a review of the Foundation vision, mission, and values statements.  He then welcomed Bill Jasien and Spencer Stouffer as trustees to their first Board meeting.  Mr. Tom Schaeffer, Foundation CEO, reported on his goals for the year and shared opportunities for process reengineering or reassignment within the Foundation.

Ms. Cheryl Lindsay, Foundation CFO, updated the Board on the financing and inspection process of the Shenandoah Valley Conference center.  She then reviewed the Financial Statements for the year ending December 31, 2016.

Students representing Divest JMU presented to the Board, asking for a commitment to divestment from the top 200 publicly traded fossil fuel companies over a 5-7 year period in addition to an opportunity for partnership and collaboration with the foundation.  The Foundation Board agreed to consider the proposal and provide a resolution within the month.

In the afternoon session of the Board meeting, each committee gave their respective reports.  The executive committee announced a search committee to appoint a new CEO.  Mr. Schaeffer has announced his retirement for June of 2018.

The board was pleased to hear from Mr. Shaun Mooney, director of the Valley Scholars program.  There are currently 104 students in the program from eight partner high schools.  The students come to campus and work with all of the colleges under the tutelage of 35 JMU student mentors.  They learn about various professions, partake in etiquette luncheons, engage in service projects, and have fun.

Dr. Nick Langridge provided a fundraising update.  Giving Day is scheduled for Tuesday, March 14, 2017.  Dr. Langridge shared the short video, “We are the Dukes of JMU”, capitalizing on the National football championship!!
