SUMMARY: The Promise of Partnerships event, held during President Jim Schmidt's inauguration week events, was an opportunity to highlight collaboration between JMU and the Harrisonburg Community.

This spirit of collaboration was on display during the Promise of Partnerships event, held on Friday, April 10, as part of James Madison University President Jim Schmidt’s inauguration week. The event served as both a celebration and a powerful reflection of the deep and evolving connections between the university and the Harrisonburg community.

Participants gathered in downtown Harrisonburg for a walking tour of local businesses and nonprofits, offering a firsthand look at partnerships in action. More than a showcase, the tour illustrated the tangible, everyday impact of these collaborations. Local organizations benefit from access to student talent, faculty expertise, and university resources, while JMU gains valuable opportunities to embed students in real-world settings. From internships and applied learning experiences to volunteerism and collaborative projects, these relationships strengthen both the educational experience and the capacity of community partners to advance their missions.

The event also featured a panel discussion moderated by President Schmidt, bringing together community leaders who have partnered with JMU in meaningful ways, both personally and professionally. Panelists included Peter Denbigh ('02, '11) of Innovation Hubs, Andrea Dono of Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance, and Leeanne Shepherd of Second Home Learning Center. Each speaker shared insights into how these partnerships have grown over time, highlighting the importance of trust, shared goals, and a commitment to mutual benefit. Their experiences demonstrated how collaboration can spark innovation, expand opportunity, and address community needs in lasting ways.

A reception following the panel provided an opportunity for attendees to continue the conversation, build new connections, and explore future collaborations. It also spotlighted the work of JMU’s Office of Economic and Community Development (OECD) and the Division of Research, Economic Development and Innovation (REDI), both of which play a key role in fostering and supporting partnerships across the region. Through initiatives that connect academic expertise with community priorities, these offices help ensure that collaboration remains a cornerstone of JMU’s mission.
