JMU workshop equips public sector leaders with strategic storytelling tools
News
On August 19, 2025, the JMU Office of Economic & Community Development, in partnership with JMU School of Communication Studies (SCOM) and Institute for Constructive Advocacy & Dialogue (ICAD), hosted a hands-on Advocacy & Storytelling Workshop for Nonprofits & Government at the JMU Collabratory at the Harrisonburg Innovation Hub.
Facilitated by Dr. Lori Britt, Director of SCOM and ICAD Co-Director, and featuring Dr. Rob Alexander, Associate Professor of Political Science and ICAD Co-Director, the workshop focused on helping public service professionals use the power of storytelling to inspire action, build trust, and strengthen organizational identity.
Participants explored:
- The essential stories every nonprofit and government leader should be able to tell
- How to craft compelling narratives that connect with diverse audiences
- Techniques for adapting stories across platforms and stakeholder groups
- Strategies for building a culture of storytelling within their organizations
“Stories offer more than just information. They create connection, context, and meaning,” said Dr. Britt. “In times of change, they help us make sense of our work and invite others to join us in shaping the future.”
Attendees engaged in small-group exercises to share and refine real-world stories from their organizations, gaining peer feedback and insight into how their narratives could be more memorable and actionable for their different audiences.
Jessica Blythe attended the session on behalf of the City of Staunton Economic Development and said, "What made this workshop so valuable was that we weren't just listening to presentations - we were actively crafting and sharing stories, then getting constructive feedback from Dr. Britt, and our peers. I left with specific tools and techniques I could use the very next day in my role with the City of Staunton's economic development efforts"
The event drew a full house and strong participation highlights the growing importance of storytelling as a tool in the public sector. This workshop is part of a broader series of workshops and webinars designed to equip local leaders across nonprofit, government, and business sectors with tools and knowledge to amplify the impact of their work.
