Overview

College of Education and University Studies commencement exercises for undergraduate degree candidates will be held on Saturday, May 9thh at 9:00 a.m. in the Convocation Center with College of Education Dean Dr. Phillip Wishon, Associate Vice Provost, Dr. Herb Amato and Ms. Carol Fleming, Interim Associate Vice Provost for Outreach & Engagement presiding.  The ceremony will include remarks by selected student speakers and special recognitions. Graduates will be individually recognized and receive the President’s letter of congratulations. Graduating students and guests should plan to honor all graduates by remaining until the conclusion of the ceremony.

Seating & Disability Accommodations

Your guests can expect to spend about two hours at the commencement event.  Primary seating in Convocation center is on bleacher seats. There is designated seating for guests in wheelchairs and individuals with limited mobility. Ushers will be on hand and will assist with seating in this section. In order that all guests with special needs can be accommodated, we ask that one accompanying guest or attendant sit with your family member on the floor while the remainder of your party sits in the bleachers. Interpreter Services for the Deaf are provided. Please inform us of your need by April 17th by calling (540) 568-6572. Graduate Processional and Seating

Graduates and faculty will process. Graduates must be at entrance E at the Convocation Center by 8:30 am on Saturday, May 9h. Upon processing, graduates will be seated as follows: 

  • Elementary Education teacher licensure students will be seated on the right side (facing the stage) as well as at rear of the left side.
  • Adult Degree Program graduates, IDLS non-teaching majors, Special Education Inclusive Early Childhood Education, and Middle Education teacher licensure students will be seated on the left side (facing the stage).

There will be no rehearsal for students prior to the commencement ceremony.  

Student Name Cards

Graduates, your name will be called from a preprinted NAME CARD as you walk across the stage at commencement.  Names cards will be distributed to graduates in the Office of the Registrar (5th floor of the Student Success Center) Monday, May 4 through Thursday, May 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. - See more at: http://www.jmu.edu/registrar/parents/commencement.shtml#sthash.nxaKERyq.dpuf 

INCLEMENT WEATHER

In the case of inclement weather, the ceremony will proceed as scheduled

Photography

A professional photographer will photograph each graduate crossing the stage and receiving their congratulations. Graduates may access the commencement website: http://www.jmu.edu/commencement to place orders or ask questions.

General Information

JMU is providing free shuttle bus service. Route information is included at:  http://www.jmu.edu/commencement/

Concessions including water and snack items will be available for sale before and during the ceremonies.   

As you approach campus, tune to radio station 1610 AM for updated information.  This station serves a three-mile radius. 

We recommend taking Exit 247 from Interstate 81 as the most efficient path to the Convocation Center.  

Teacher Licensure:  It is recommended that all graduates who have completed their education program apply for a Virginia Teaching License. Instructions are available at http://coe.jmu.edu/esc/.  Students who do not apply will not receive a license.
