Recognizing outstanding alumni leadership

On February 28 JMU’s Alumni Association held its annual awards banquet, and this year all six honorees have ties to the College of Business. Though their paths and approaches differ, they share a deep commitment to JMU and a dedication to serving their communities. Whether leading student organizations, teaching, building mentorship networks or contributing through advisory board service, these individuals embody true leadership and generosity.

Being the Change Award: Charles T. May, Jr. (’83)

May Jr. (‘83) has dedicated his career to service and leadership, from his time with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service to his decades of commitment to mentoring JMU students through the Ole School Alumni Scholarship Group and his role on the CoB Advisory Board. His work reflects a deep belief in fairness, opportunity and community, especially for those who are least represented in professional spaces. 

He is honored with the Being the Change Award, which recognizes an alumnus/a who embodies JMU’s motto of “Being the Change” by advancing equity and advocating for those systematically disenfranchised in our communities. Read more about Charles’s impact.

 

Inez Graybeal Roop (’35) Alumni Service Award: Eric L. Bowlin (’02)

For Eric Bowlin (’02), an Accounting Information Systems graduate, being a Duke means building bridges. From theEric Bowlin in a dark suit and purple tie in an indoor setting. Quad to the boardrooms of Deloitte, Eric has spent over 20 years facilitating access and amplifying the potential of the Madison community.

In recognition of his extraordinary devotion and the way he lives JMU’s ethos as a true connector and door opener for fellow alumni, Eric is the Inez Graybeal Roop (‘35) Distinguished Alumni Service Award recipient.

Whether he’s mentoring a recent grad or leading the JMUAA, Eric proves that the Madison experience never truly ends—it just gets stronger as we reach back to help and pull others forward


Presidential Award: Maribeth Herod (’82)

Her career reflects the impact of engaged learning and trust-driven leadership.

She was honored as the first recipient of President Jim’s Presidential Award, which recognizes a JMU alumnus/a who exemplifies exceptional engagement and leadership as an active, dedicated member of the alumni community.

 

Ronald E. Carrier Alumni Achievement Award: Matthew W. McFarlane (’92)

Since his days as a Finance student and Cadet Battalion Commander at JMU to his time today as a U.S.Portrait of a U.S. Army general in uniform standing in front of U.S. and Army flags. Army three-star general, leading and inspiring thousands, LTG Matthew W. McFarlane (’92) has always exemplified Dr. Ronald E. Carrier's inspirational, transformational, and visionary leadership.

He was honored with the Ronald E. Carrier Alumni Achievement Award, a distinction recognizing an alumnus/a whose significant and enduring contributions to society represent the highest honor bestowed by the JMU Alumni Association.

 

Young Alumni Award: Olivia Marcey (’18, ’22M)

Her impact continues to strengthen alumni connections beyond campus.

Olivia, a Computer Information Systems graduate, was honored with the Young Alumni Award, a recognition presented to a graduate of the past decade who has demonstrated outstanding service to the University through meaningful engagement and philanthropy.

 

Student Today, Alumni Tomorrow (STAT) Award: Morgan Rylee Tribby (’26)

Morgan Tribby ('26) sets a high standard for student leadership at JMU. As President of the Madison HonorsSmiling woman with long curly hair and glasses wearing a plaid blazer in a studio portrait. Leadership Council, she expanded engagement and fundraising to support scholarships and service. From humanitarian work in Ukraine to mentoring Honors students, she leads with purpose and impact across campus and beyond.

Morgan, who is double majoring in Business Management and Marketing, was honored with the Student Today, Alumni Tomorrow Award which is presented to a current student who demonstrates leadership and serves as a role model for their peers—truly embodying the spirit of “Dukes from Day One, Alumni for Life.”
