SUMMARY: The School of Media Arts & Design has established a new scholarship in honor of Professor Roger Soenksen's 50 years of service to JMU.
In honor of Professor Roger Soenksen’s 50 years of service to JMU, the School of Media Arts and Design has established the Dr. Roger Soenksen First Amendment scholarship to support a SMAD student who exemplifies the principles articulated in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Arriving at Madison College in 1976, Soenksen began his career as the Debate coach. As a professor of communications and director of forensics during the college’s transformation into James Madison University, he was vital to the growth and success of the university and to developing the School of Media Arts and Design.
Outside of the classroom, Soenksen has served as the Faculty Athletic Representative for 20 years, influencing the lives of students both inside and outside the classroom. As Joe Hinshaw, Director of the School of Media Arts and Design, says, “JMU and the School of Media Arts and Design wouldn't be where they are without Roger's tireless work ethic, his dynamic teaching, and his dedication to mentoring.”
The scholarship — inspired by Soenksen’s scholarly interests in the First Amendment and his commitment to student mentoring and support — will be awarded to students who seek to mentor and support those around them, whether through student media, community outreach, or public service.
